Is halal food healthier?

Halal meat and halal food has become increasingly accessible in the UK over the decades. Today, when you go shopping in your local supermarket, whether it be Asda, Morrisons or any other big branded store, you will undoubtedly come across a range (sometimes varying in size) of halal food, kosher, European and so on.

With the UK a proud multicultural country, shopping to suit dietary and religious requirements has never been easier.

So, we know why we should eat halal for religious reasons but are you aware of the many health benefits that come from eating halal?

Firstly, for those who may not follow halal, let’s start with what it means to Muslims. The term ‘halal’ comes from the Arabic meaning of permissible.

Halal food constitutes of how an animal is slaughtered. For it to be halal, the animal must be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter. The blood must be then drained from the carcass. During the slaughter, a Muslin will recite the tasmiya/shahada.

Now that we know what is halal, let’s look into the benefits of eating halal food:

  1. Better care of animal: It is widely accepted that animals reared for halal meat receive better care. To ensure meat is halal, the animal must be treated with respect and care before slaughter. Even during the slaughter process, halal dictates that the animal must not be slaughtered in front of other live animals. Thus, reducing stress for the animal and subsequently, preventing the animal from releasing hormones when stressed during its final stage
  2. Less uric acid: Reducing stress for the animal means there is little to no impact on hormones, especially those released when stressed. This means the meat contains no uric acid
  3. Cleaner meat: As blood is drained from the meat, it means there is less chance of impurities remaining in the end product. With blood drained, the meat tastes better, has less impurities and last longer than non-halal
