Frozen food: how, what, where and why!

Have you ever wondered how we came about freezing our food? Can you even imagine your life without your trusted freezer in it?

Yes, we are big advocates of fresh food but we are also huge, huge, huge fans of frozen food – not that we’re biased!

But how did we, as humans, come to find the joys, benefits and ease of freezing our food?

Once upon a time

It has been widely reported that the Chinese used ice cellars to preserve food during Winter back in 3,000 BC. In addition, Romans used snow to insulate cellars which were then used to store food. Hard to imagine a life before your freezer eh? Can you imagine using snow to keep your food frozen? No, we can’t either!

Captain Birdseye knew a trick or two

We have all heard of Birdseye. As a brand, they’re known for providing frozen food globally but where did it all start? Essentially, they’re the first global brand that we all recognise so we have to give them a mention. Back in 1917, Clarence Birdseye came across local inhabitants preserving fish and meat by freezing the meat in the cold Arctic temperatures. He also found Inuits had discovered the essential trick – preserving food at its peak of quality allowed the meat or fish to preserve its taste and freshness. Thus, the modern day notion of freezing food began.

Convenient family meals

It was in the 1970s when frozen food as we know it today became hugely popular. Value, convenience and quality became the norm and family favourites that we still enjoy to this day were introduced. From ready meals through to chips and pizzas, the 70s saw a shift to what we ate and how we ate it. By the mid 70s, owning a freezer became very much the done thing to do and have!

Frozen vs Fresh

Entering the 1980s, a growing debate started circulating in the food industry. Is frozen good for your diet? With more and more people becoming health conscious, people started exploring what additives and e-numbers were. Frozen good giants started creating campaigns to promote the freshness of frozen food and how they contained little to no additives. In addition, lighter choices or healthier frozen meals became a must for most.
